Lent Festival in Maribor
One of the largest cultural festival of the kind in Europe - the LENT festival took place in Maribor from June 27 to July 12, 2008.

2013 Universiade organisers announced
“The 26th Winter Universiade 2013 will take place in Maribor,” said Mr George E Killian, the President of the International University Sport Federation (FISU) today at the announcement ceremony of the 2013 university games. According to his words, the FISU board took unanimous decision that Maribor, together with Ruse and Zrece is ready to organise such an important sports event. “We are happy that the integrity and superiority of our candidature convinced FISU Executive Committee. We are convinced we will prepare a universiade others will have problems following,” said the President of SUSA prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik right after the announcement.

Final decision on the Universiades 2013 to be taken in Brussels
Representatives of Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA), the Government of Slovenia, Cities Maribor, Ruse and Zrece, University of Maribor, Olympic Committee of Slovenian and Sports centre Pohorje will tomorrow present the candidature of Maribor for the 26th Winter Universiade in 2013. The presentation will be held in front of the Executive Committee Members of the International University Sport Federation (FISU) which will give the final decision on the organisation of the Universiade.

FISU Evaluation visit concludes
Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) hosted a 6-member Evaluation Commission of the International University Sport Federation (FISU) in the last few days in Maribor. The delegation inspected the capacities and the readiness of Maribor, Ruse and Zrece to organise the 26th Winter Universiade 2013 in Maribor, Slovenia.

FISU Evaluation visit - Day 2
The FISU Evaluation commission focused on inspecting the facilities on Maribor Pohorje on their second day of their visit. The Maribor Pohorje will host the majority of sports; namely alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross country (sprint) ad ski jumping. The organisers showed them the tracks, existing and planned accommodation facilities, multi-purpose sports hall, the snow stadium and other technical structures needed for executing the Universiade.

FISU Evaluation visit - Day 1
Delegation of the International University Sports Federation FISU, started with technical meetings and inspection of the venues for the 26th Winter Universiade Maribor 2013.One of the most important events today was the technical meeting, at which the technical capabilities were presented - transport & logistics, accommodation, accreditation center, technical solutions, support and communication, and similar aspects of organising the Winter Universiade in Maribor.

FISU Inspection Commission visit announcement
Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) will host a 6-member FISU commission in Maribor between April 14 and 16. The delegation will evaluate readiness and capacities of Maribor, Ruše and Rogla to organise the 26th Winter universiade in 2013.

Meeting and Press Conference in Maribor

Yesterday, on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, a coordination meeting of the bidding committee for the 26th Winter Universiade 2013 took place in Maribor. The meeting was followed by a press conference, at which the Slovene candidature for the Universiade was presented in more details.

2013 Universiade Bidding Period Closed
FISU has officially closed the bidding period for the 2013 Universiades. Threecities have officially entered their candidature for the Summer universiade 2013, and there is one candidature for the Winter universiade 2013.

Highest support for Slovenian bid for Winter Universiade 2013
The President of the Slovenian University Sports Association, prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik, presented the bid for the 26th Winter Universiade Maribor 2013 to the members of Slovenian Parliament on March 5, 2008. According to Slovene legislation, the National Assembly, as the highest legislative authority, has to confirm any candidature for the universiades.

44th Golden Fox
The 44th Golden Fox Trophy, traditional women's Alpine skiing (slalom) event, took place in Maribor, Slovenia on January 12 & 13, 2008. The Golden Fox (Zlata lisica) was organised superbly, and will stay in a pleasant memory to most competitors, especially the winners.

European Capital of Culture 2012
Maribor was nominated for 2012 European Culture Capital. Slovenia's second largest city was recommended for the title by an international commission last year.

EUSA General Assembly 2007
The 9th EUSA General Assembly took place in Belgrade (SRB) from November 30 to December 2, 2007. The delegates from 39 member federations were welcomed by Mr. Alberto Gualtieri, EUSA President, Sinisa Jasnic, President of the University Sports Federation of Serbia and George E. Killian, FISU President.

From October 26th to 28th, the new FISU Executive Committee, which was elected for the period 2007-2011 in Bangkok, held its first official meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

2013 Universiades bids announced
FISU announced today the list of cities, interested in orgaising the Universiads in 2013. The deadline for submitting interest was October 15, and the ultimate deadline for closing the bid will be March 15th, 2008.

The traditional annual Students Arena, largest students fair in Slovenia, concluded today. SUSA was present at the Arena, which took place from October 16 to 18 at the Ljubljana Fair.

European Universities Futsal Championship concludes
The 4th European Universities Futsal Championship, organised by the Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA), took place from July 23 to 30, 2007 in Izola, Slovenia. 20 men from 16 European countries participated on the event, which represents a new record.

2006 EUSA General Assembly
Valencia, a wonderful Spanish city was the venue of the 8th EUSA General Assembly, which took place from December 1-3, 2006.
The representatives from 33 EUSA member federations participated on the event. Beside them, also many guests were present, including a huge number of FISU Executive Committee members, EUSA Technical Delegates, EUC 2007 Organisers and members of European bidding cities for Universiades 2011 such as Poznan, Kazan, Murcia, Belgrade Universiade 2009 and also Maribor.

FISU Inspection Visit - Day 4
The fourth day of the FISU evaluation visit, the delegation was received by the Rector of the University of Maribor Ivan Rozman. He said he was very happy with the inspection visit in Maribor, and stressed the importance of Universiade at development of Maribor and other Slovenian Universities.

FISU Inspection Visit - Day 3
FISU Delegation which is on its evaluation inspection visit in Maribor these days, was present at the technical presentation of the project. The competition sites and capabilities in Maribor and Ruše were presented by top Slovene experts from various sports: Tone Vogrinec - alpine sports, Bojan Jošt - ski jumping, Janez Pustovrh, cross country and combined, Boris Čeh - Ice Hockey, Iztok Kvas - Snowboarding, Janez Vodičar - Biathlon.

Slovenian delegation visited Torino
In Torino, the venue of the next Winter Universiade, the Heads of Delegation meeting took place in Torino from September 11th to 13th, 2006. The purpose of the meeting was to check how the venue preparation is going on as regards both the structures in Torino and the mountain venues.

The representatives of the bidding committee for the 2011 Universiade Maribor Mr. Boris Sovic, the Mayor of Maribor, Mr. Ivan Rozman, the Rector of the University of Maribor, Mr. Matjaz Pecovnik, SUSA Secretary General and Mr. Bozidar Pucnik, SUSA Vice- President were present at the 3rd FISU Rectors’ Forum which was held in Bangkok from July 19 to 22, 2006.

XVI World University Table Tennis Championship 2006 organised in Maribor
Slovenian University Sports Association organised the XVI World University Table Tennis Championship, which took place from July 4 to 9, 2006 in Maribor. After organising three European University Championships, this was the first World University Championship organised in Slovenia. 153 students from 24 countries came to Maribor to fight for the titles of champions. The most successful were the students from China, who won most of the medals.

Special evening at the cultural festival Lent in Maribor
The City of Maribor, which is also a candidate to become the European Capital of Culture in the year 2012, hosts every year the Festival Lent, one of the biggest festivals of the kind in Europe. The Festival takes place in July and attracts more than 400 performers with half of million of visitors.

All the relevant partners and institutions in Slovenia supported the candidature
With 70 of 71 votes for and without a vote against, the National Assembly of Slovenia approved the proposal of the Slovenian University Sports Association to start the procedure for the organisation of the 2011 Winter Universiade in Maribor. Prior to that, the proposal already got support of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, the Government of the Republic Slovenia, the Olympic Committee of Slovenia, the City Council of Maribor, the Slovenian Student Union and all the Slovenian Universities. The day after the decision of the Parliament, the Slovenian University Sports Association officially informed the International University Sports Federation (FISU) on bidding for the organisation of the 2011 World University Winter Games.
