Slovenian University Sports Association organised the XVI World University Table Tennis Championship, which took place from July 4 to 9, 2006 in Maribor. After organising three European University Championships, this was the first World University Championship organised in Slovenia. 153 students from 24 countries came to Maribor to fight for the titles of champions. The most successful were the students from China, who won most of the medals.
Beside the sports programme, the participants could enjoy XVI WORLD UNIVERSITY TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP 2006 ORGANISED IN MARIBOR the rich cultural programme, since the Festival Lent took place at the same time.

The FISU Delegates as well as all the Heads of Delegations were welcomed at a reception given by prof. dr. Ivan Rozman, the Rector of the University of Maribor. During the reception, the University of Maribor and FISU exchanged gifts as is the tradition in international sports meetings.

The Rector presented Mr. Outeirino a picture of Leon Stukelj, the world known Olympic Champion, who was born in Maribor.
